Yonkers, New York, February 24, 2006 / – Aureon Laboratories announced today that it has launched Prostate Px, a unique predictive test that can provide patients and their physicians with a personalized determination of their risk for prostate cancer recurrence following removal of the prostate.
Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and second leading cause of cancer death among men in the United States with approximately 230,000 newly diagnosed cases in 2005 and nearly 30,000 deaths. About 85% of all cases diagnosed are clinically localized and treated with radical prostatectomy or radiation therapy. Managing these patients is complicated because it is difficult to accurately predict which patients are at high or low risk for developing prostate cancer recurrence post-operatively.
Prostate Px provides physicians with a unique insight into a patient's chance of developing a cancer recurrence following the removal of the prostate. The physician receives a Prostate Px score for both the probability of PSA Recurrence (bio-chemical recurrence) and Clinical Failure (distant metastasis). The results are based on Aureon’s unique Systems Pathology platform which integrates clinical history, tissue pathology and molecular analyses. Prostate Px, in conjunction with traditional methods of disease analysis, can provide patients and their caregivers valuable insight when making post-operative therapy decisions such as planning appropriate adjuvant therapy.
“We are pleased to offer this critical enhancement in the management of post-surgical prostate cancer care. It is our hope that the application of recent insights from molecular and computational biology as embodied in Aureon Prostate Px™ will significantly improve the decision making process for the patients we serve,” stated Vijay Aggarwal, Ph.D., Aureon's CEO and President.
Prostate Px is performed using the formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue from the patient’s prostate, which is stored locally by the hospital pathology department. Therefore the test does not require the patient to undergo any additional procedures. Results are available within approximately one week. About Aureon Laboratories
Aureon Laboratories' mission is to enable personalized patient care through predictive pathology. Aureon has developed a high throughput Systems Pathology technology platform to predict individual clinical outcomes through the interrogation of tissue. The platform generates and analyzes an integrated, digital view of clinical findings, tissue micro-anatomy and tissue molecular pathology to determine which combination of features predicts specified individual clinical outcomes. Allied with major cancer centers, Aureon operates a CLIA-certified laboratory that provides predictive pathology services to the practicing physician.
